Lignano Sabbiadoro.Lignano is a beach resort in Friuli Venezia Giulia, famous for it long beaches. There are beaches of eight kilometres, hotels and villas situated in the heart of the pine forests, there are amusement and water parks, discotheques and full of cultural happenings.

It wasn't this organized when, at the beginning of the 50's, Ernest Hemingway called it "Florida of Italy", making it its' favourite domicile. The people of Lignano love him and dedicated him a park and a literary price.

At the beginning of the 1900, there were only dunes, pine forests, reed thickets and grassy beaches. In less than a century, it became a rich peninsula with three major resorts: Lignano Sabbiadoro, Lignano Pineta e Lignano Riviera. These three resorts are connected but without altering their peculiar structure. Sabbiadoro is the place where to have fun: after the beach, at night you can count on various bars, entertainment places, a number of discos and a rich list of musical events which take place at the Alpe Adria Arena, a perfect place for summer television programmes such as the Festivalbar. Lignano Pineta is where you can find tranquillity since it is the residential zone and where you can relax thanks to the spa. On the other hand, Lignano Riviera is ideal for camping because it is the area where you find the nature. On the golden beaches of Lignano you can practice and choose from many hobbies: water-gym, aerobics, windsurf, sailing or you can participate in beach soccer or beach volley tournaments.

Lignano is preparing itself to host, in the year 2005, a big sports event: the city, which already hosted big events, will host young people from all over Europe which will participate at the European Youth Olympic Festival.
But in Lignano, apart from the sea and the beach, you can also
find six parks divided between science parks, theme parks and amusement parks
(such as Parco
Zoo Punta Verde, Gulliverlandia
Aquarium, Aquasplash,
Strabilia
Luna Park, I Gommosi, Parco Junior) and a golf course of 18 holes with
a refined golf club. There is a big choice between all water sports, horse
back riding and bicycle excursions for which a cycle path has been made. A
part of this path runs along the sea and it connects all three resorts. The
elegant shops in down town, for those which prefer shopping, offer a large
and varied choice of products.

Marano Lagunare
Those who do not want to just limit themselves to a "beach
life" can visit the inlands which offer an interesting alternative. Just
a few kilometres from Lignano you have Latisana, a nice little city where
you can try, in one of the many restaurants, typical food of the area and
can visit two natural reserves: Marano Lagunare which can be reached with
a motor vessel e with which one can penetrate in the lagoon that becomes the
mouth of the river Stella, thus one can also visit the natural reserve and
the "casone", the typical house of the fishermen. "Valle Canal
Novo" is the other reserve and it is an impressive environment which
can be visited departing from Marano and which has a modern Visiting Centre
(based on the Anglo-Saxon Wetlands Centres). It is a destination for naturalists,
students and bird-watchers. The Marano lagoon gives its' name to a wine-and-food
festival "Sapori di laguna" which puts together seventeen restaurants
in the territory.
It takes place around Oct.- dic. and gives people the opportunity to taste
typical local foods, prepared following the traditional recipes and served
with local wines. Merlot, Cabernet and Refosco for the red wines and Tocai
friulano and Pinot for the white ones.

The area of Lignano is one of the major sailing centres of the Adriatic: it has 108 docks (Darsena demaniale and Marina Punta Faro in Sabbiadoro, Marina Uno and Marina Punta Verde in Riviera, Darsena Centrale of Aprilia Marittima, Marina Capo Nord and Marina Punta Gabbiani in Aprilia Marittima, Marina Stella in Palazzolo dello Stella, River Port and Cantieri Marina San Giorgio) and can host more than 5 thousand boats that from here, can reach the Gulf of Trieste, Istria coast and the Dalmatian Island.
